The Clinical Flags lecture is a presentation reviewing the evolution and history of the clinical flag system and then a dive into red flags, especially about the known issues with the extremely poor validity of the majority of red flag signs and symptoms.
In 2020 The International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Physical Therapists’ have published the International Framework for Red Flags for Potential Serious Spinal Pathologies published. This is an evidence informed expert consensus document that has reviewed the literature, looked at the validity of red-flag signs and symptoms, rated their reliability and offer clinicians a risk based clinical reasoning model, that assists us in navigating four key serious, rare and difficult to identify pathologies.
The key serious spinal pathologies they identified are: cauda equina syndrome, spinal fracture, spinal infection and spinal malignancy.
