Osteopathic Foundation supports NCOR through the funding of three new projects

The Osteopathic Foundation (oF) has recently awarded the National Council for Osteopathic Research (NCOR) funding for three key pieces of work to support the profession’s development.

Over £60,000 has been awarded to support the development of key networks, evaluate our NHS collaborations, and enhance the credibility of clinical trials. £25,000 of that sum has been allocated to establish POWER (Patients and Osteopaths Working Together to Enhance Research), a practice-based research network (PBRN). PBRNs facilitate research in everyday clinical practice by fostering collaboration among clinicians, patients, and academics.

This initiative aims to gather data from real-world osteopathic practices in the UK, engage practising osteopaths in research, and develop patient-centric projects. Dr Daniel Bailey has recently joined the NCOR team to focus on the POWER initiative.

‘We are delighted to have received this funding from The oF, and also to see how much interest there is in the profession to develop research skills. We are keen to continue this close collaboration with The oF and to further support osteopaths in expanding their career.’
Grants awarded

NCOR has received £18,841 to investigate the experiences of osteopaths working in the NHS. The study aims to explore their roles, including unexpected aspects, and provide valuable insights for future osteopaths. Additionally, £15,810 has been allocated to assess the quality and credibility of clinical trials in osteopathy.

The project will identify any issues with rigour in these trials and propose solutions to improve future research. Amandine Senequier, a research associate at the University of Exeter, has been appointed as a research assistant for this project under the supervision of David Hohenschurz-Schmidt and Dr Jerry Draper-Rodi, the NCOR Director.

Nadine Hobson, vice-chair of The oF said, ‘NCOR is a key stakeholder when it comes to developing and advancing the credibility of osteopathy within the wider healthcare community. They put forward some robust proposals that would benefit the profession and improve our evidence base. We are pleased to invest in their work and look forward to sharing the results with you all.’

Dr Jerry Draper-Rodi said, ‘We would like to thank The oF for their confidence and support in NCOR. We have worked closely with The oF in the last couple of years, and their work is key to the success of the profession. We are delighted to have received this funding from The oF, and also to see how much interest there is in the profession to develop research skills (based on the number and quality of applications recently received). We are keen to continue this close collaboration with The oF and to further support osteopaths in expanding their career.’
