Osteopathic Foundation announces successful grant recipients

The Osteopathic Foundation (oF) has announced the successful recipients of its 2024 Open Grants Programme, awarding nearly £58,000 to three innovative projects that aim to advance development, education and research of osteopathic practice.

Following a rigorous evaluation process, the chosen initiatives are expected to bolster the evidence base for osteopathy, enhance career opportunities, and strengthen professional structures within the field.

Funded projects

1. National Council for Osteopathic Research (NCOR): £20,000
Project Title: Adverse Events in Osteopathy and Other Manual Therapies
Concept Of Grants. Business. Finance

This project addresses the critical need for updated data on adverse events in manual therapies, revisiting a review last conducted 16 years ago. Using prospective cohort studies, NCOR aims to collate and analyse large datasets to provide more accurate insights into the risks associated with manual therapy treatments. This evidence will enable practitioners to discuss risks with patients more effectively, support informed consent, and improve shared decision-making processes.

2. University College of Osteopathy (UCO): £20,000
Project Title: OsMoSys Project - Osteopathic Models Synthesis

Focused on modernising osteopathic education, the OsMoSys project seeks to align theoretical models taught to students with current evidence-based practices. By refining the conceptual frameworks underpinning osteopathic care, this initiative aims to ensure that educational content translates effectively into clinical excellence.

3. University College of Osteopathy (UCO): £17,980
Project Title: Understanding Osteopathy in the United Kingdom – A National Cross-Sectional Study Employing the Osteo-TAQ

This study leverages the Osteo-TAQ, a validated survey tool, to gain a comprehensive understanding of clinical osteopathic practice in the UK. Objectives include comparing UK practices with international counterparts, helping practitioners reflect on and enhance their skills, and supporting compliance with Continuing Professional Development (CPD) standards. Additionally, the study aims to improve workforce retention and career progression by mapping osteopathic practice to broader healthcare frameworks.

Following a rigorous evaluation process, the chosen initiatives are expected to bolster the evidence base for osteopathy, enhance career opportunities, and strengthen professional structures within the field.

Impact and vision

Through these investments, the Osteopathic Foundation underscores its commitment to advance the field of osteopathy in improving patient care. The funded projects will contribute to a stronger evidence base, inform educational and clinical practices, and support the development of osteopathy in the UK and beyond.

Applications for the next round of grant funding will open in mid-2025
