Osteoporosis and Fragility Fractures

Thursday 25 April 2024, 4-5pm
osteoporosis-400x400

Outside of advancing age, do you know the risk factors for developing osteoporosis? Are you aware of the available tools that help stratify the probability of osteoporosis and fragility fracture risk? Are you cognisant of the signs and symptoms of vertebral fractures? Can you identify the difference between fragility fractures and pathological fractures? Have you been made aware of the appropriate management for osteoporosis and associated fragility fractures?

Osteoporosis is a common bone health condition that is associated with advancing age and is estimated to affect over three million people in the UK. Vertebral fragility fractures are a common consequence of osteoporosis that is not managed adequately and has the potential for long-term impact on a person’s quality of life.

Currently, only 30% of vertebral fractures are identified and up to 20% of patients will sustain another fracture within the first year and have an increased relative risk for a hip fracture. These lead to both acute and chronic back pain, substantial spinal deformity, functional disability, decreased quality of life, and increased mortality.
